Thank You For Suing, Drake

Joe Biden and Donald Trump hand out pardons; CNN gets its clock cleaned in court; Eric Adams is unsubtly lobbying for legal help from Donald Trump.

Dear listeners,

Welcome to the first Serious Trouble of the new Trump administration. We start this week with a discussion of pardons: the ones Joe Biden gave on his way out of office and the ones Donald Trump gave on his way in. Biden gave a variety of preemptive pardons to people who could have faced investigation at the hands of Trump’s Department of Justice, and Trump pardoned or commuted (mostly pardoned) all the January 6 convicts, while also terminating hundreds of ongoing prosecutions related to the riot.

Free subscribers get our discussion of all those pardons. For premium subscribers, we also have a discussion of the Jack Smith reports: the one about the January 6 prosecution, which was released publicly, and the one about the documents prosecution, which Judge Aileen Cannon has blocked from being released to Congress (which, as she notes, had not officially asked for it anyway). We look at New York Mayor Eric Adams’ overt campaign for a pardon, and about his not-too-far-fetched claim that the US Attorney who indicted him intends to run for office in New York himself.

We look at a defamation lawsuit that CNN lost (and apparently deserved to lose, says Ken) and at the network’s choice to settle before the jury got to award punitive damages. And finally, we express our thanks to Drake for filing consistently entertaining legal actions that we get to cover — in this case, a defamation lawsuit against his own music label.

We hope you enjoy the episode,

Josh
