Point of correction - when speaking about the value of junior lawyers and how to train them in the age of AI, David said that in the UK and Canada, juniors article for 2-3 years after finishing law school. While I believe that is the case in the UK, in Canada our articling term is only 10-12 months depending on which province you’re in and how the bar exam / bar course is structured within that term.

Thanks for that—good to know!

that was a great episode. David was a good replacement for ken, though not forever I hope. nothing against you David. one thing I hesitate to mention but if I'm thinking it other people may be too- - do you know what upspeak is? it can be very distracting and also rob the speaker of some credibility. don't hate me for saying it. again, you were a great guest

Thanks for the kind words, Alan! But as a listener of Serious Trouble myself, I agree with you: I want Ken back too!

And thanks for the note on upspeak—I will be mindful of that in the future! (But I think it might just be how I naturally talk, which could make it hard to address....)

You speak with authority, which mitigates the effect, Lol. Thank you for being so gracious about it; I really struggled with whether to say something, but about a decade ago someone pointed out to me that I naturally do that myself, as if everything is a list I haven't gotten to the end of yet. Took me a long time to work that down LOL and I'll still go there if I'm presenting in an uncomfortable situation. You know who else is really big on upspeak? Liz Dye, who I also listen to and love.

Again, thank you for being here for this one. I learned a lot, and I'm going to find your podcast right now.

Day 1 subscriber, listened to every episode, usually multiple times.

Personal opinion of course, but this is the worst episode in the entire run.

40 tedious minutes of ... lawyers make a lot of money. With just a token couple minutes of discussing an actual case at the end. Can't wait till Ken is back from vacation.

Couldn’t agree more. My eyes started twitching at around minute 31 when Lat just keeps repeating “ai, ai,ai” and “Claude” “ChatGPT” etc regarding employment discrimination suits. I was happy to hear about it the Trump law firm suits but my god all this did was make me miss Ken and reminded me that he’s the main reason I listen. I’m definitively not a centrist lol not a fan of all that and certainly tired of hearing how a madlibs word generator is going to revolutionize our lives

I suspect Ken might have had a response to the suggestion that there are moral ways to work for big oil. 😏

I’m imaging a rich person become wealthier, and decide “I am going to sue more people”

I appreciated this episode that stepped back and looking at the landscape of law firms and legal careers, plus the updates on the fallout for the settling vs non-settling legal firms. It found it helpful to understand more what the day-to-day world of many lawyers looks like.

Cases from SCOTUS coming in, increasing the power of the prez to fire people, except for the very special Fed for very special something something reasons.

And now birthright citizenship - the dissents make you wonder if any of them has used the term "anchor baby".
